In the third chorus, there is no "reading books of old". Even tho he's determined to do anything it takes to be more. He doesn't think he's good enough for her and he wants to be, but she's happy with things the way they are. And she's asking how far you wanna go, what you want to risk. In the second chorus (books of old, the testaments and about the moon and it's eclipse) he's older, He's with a girlfriend. Therefore, the "I want something just like this" from his parent. The first lyric is "BUT she said." the BUT is in there, cuz at one point his parents told him he could be anything he wants, but now he doesn't feel good enough. In the first chorus (books of old, like spider man and Batman) he's a kid with a parent, and doesn't think he's good enough. Rather it's a combination of these during different stages of his life. The song goes deeper than just being about a boy and his mom, or a man and his girlfriend. You can tell, what everyone else is saying is correct.
